UI athlete wins at Boston Marathon
University of Illinois wheelchair racing team member Tatyana McFadden won the women's wheelchair race Monday at the Boston Marathon.
The University of Illinois senior battled back into contention after a spill near the 3-mile mark and distanced herself from runner-up Sandra Graf of Switzerland through the hills and down Beacon Street, finishing with a time of 1 hour, 45 minutes and 25 seconds to win the women’s wheelchair division. The United States had two of the top-three finishers as Amanda McGrory of Champaign, Ill., finished third in 1:49:19 behind Graf’s 1:46:54.
McFadden put her uphill strength to use as she began to close in on Graf near the turn onto Commonwealth Avenue, at the Newton fire station. By the time McFadden reached the top of Heartbreak Hill she needed only to maintain a conservative pace over the final six miles.
