The Latino Latina Alumni Association (LLAA) Board had some special visitors on Saturday, April 13. Raymond Valadez, '89 LAS, Chairman, called the board meeting to order and introduced Stacey Kostell, Director of the Office of Admissions. Other speakers included Veronica Kann from La Casa and the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations; Cecilia Suarez from the Illinois Leadership Center; and Professor Edna Viruell-Fuentes from the Department of Latina Latino Studies.
Key to the agenda was finding additional areas for alumni to interact with UI students, both socially and professionally. Since the announcement of LLAA's endowment, board members Angelica Alfaro '07 LAS, Susie Diaz de Leon '06 LAS, Evelin Freytas '06 LAS, Audrey Jonas '11 LAS, Jose Martinez '91 ENG, Renzo Mejia '10 LAS, and Florentina Rico '97 ARCH have been focused on statistics of the number of applicants to UI of Hispanic ethnicity. LLAA will be creating future events both for prospective students as well as current students. One of their main concerns is the efficiency of resources provided to Latino Latina UI students and how they can best partner with the University in preparing these students for graduation.
